Communications and Engagement Director - Strategy & Policy

Job Function

The Communications and Engagement Director will play a key role in enabling OGCI to drive climate actions and to achieve its new ambitions. The Director will be part of a lean & diverse team. Working closely with the OGCI leadership, its member companies, the executive committee and OGCI workstreams, the Director will be responsible for developing and executing innovative and impactful communications plans and activities, working with key international stakeholders, media, events and messaging.
The right candidate has a strategic mindset and a hands-on approach, a drive to be part of the energy transition, excellent ability to translate a strategy into a narrative, messages and overall communication together with a positive mindset and excellent collaboration skills.

Key Responsibility Areas

  • Be an integrated member of the OGCI team with a particular responsibility for communication and engagement, including messaging and narrative, news media, events and social media.
  • Management of all external communications, including announcements and campaigns.
  • Coordinate and lead work in the Communication Task Force, composed of Communications representatives from OGCI’s member companies.
  • Source opportunities for OGCI to engage and communicate, be proactive in structuring and progressing the communication plan and marketing materials to maximize impact and raise OGCI’s profile.
  • Innovate and develop creative thinking to refresh how OGCI communicates, while remaining within the boundaries of the agreed CEO and Excom strategy, setting and maintaining a pace of delivery, raising OGCI’s brand profile as a key actor in addressing the climate challenge.
  • Support in planning and organising of OGCI events, as well as facilitating media management, executive presentations, dialogue with partnerships and other engagement opportunities.
  • Facilitation and development of internal communications.
  • Oversee the production of digital and graphic materials.
  • Collaborate closely with the the OGCI Climate Investments Chief Marketing Officer and be part of the OGCI communication team and help oversee agencies providing services to OGCI.

Main Responsibilities and Accountabilities

(Direct and functional reporting relationships; interaction within and between functions)
  • Reports directly to the Chair of the OGCI Executive Committee.
  • Very close collaboration with OGCI Climate Investments’ Chief Marketing Officer, who is overseeing the combined brand and Climate Investments, and the wider Marketing and Communications team.
  • Close collaboration with the OGCI Strategy and Policy team, including Program Managers and coordinators, and key advisors.
  • Member Company Workstream and Task Force Leads and their key stakeholders as needed.
  • Working closely with Member Company representatives and their communication teams, especially the Communications Task Force.

Engaging Stakeholders and Audiences

  • To understand and support communications with key stakeholders and audiences including international actors, NGO's, IGO's, industrials, associations, press and the general public.
  • To develop and maintain a clear understanding of the stakeholder universe and description of target audiences, and ensure effective delivery of the story of OGCI.
  • To source opportunities and manage enquiries from the media for interviews, quotes, etc. and position OGCI as a brand in mainstream and specialized top-tier media publications.
  • To co-ordinate communications across the Communications Task Force, Workstreams and the Strategy and Policy team, and external consultants, in order to keep member companies informed / consulted.
  • To engage and leverage the full range of resources available within Member Companies.

Providing Platforms and Events

  • To support the full production of own events and media opportunities, from participant/delegate identification through to content and partnerships, with support from external events management and public relations agencies.
  • To manage a global external events calendar, facilitating OGCI participation or sponsorship as appropriate. Tasks include sourcing opportunities to position OGCI at key events, tracking invitations, identifying speakers across OGCI, liaising with host organisations and the preparation and support of engagement, including key messages, slides and speeches / own events hosting.
  • To efficiently manage high frequency of participation by OGCI in external events, maintain a set of “ready to use” up-to-date talking points/key messages for speaker briefings.

Strategic Marketing

  • To execute and implement an effective marketing and communications strategy, with ongoing identification and evaluation of communications opportunities arising from OGCI activities.
  • To support the communication and marketing requirements of the ExCom, OGCI Strategy and Policy team and senior executives.

Expanding Outreach / Communications / Content

  • To understand data insights and apply them into decision making and planning.
  • To deliver a cohesive message across all internal and external communication channels, with focus on social media and digital platforms.
  • To co-ordinate and review press inquiries for the ExCom and assist with interviews and develop media relations and positioning, as required and liaise with external media agency.
  • To work closely with OGCI Climate Investments, Member Company functions, coordinating communication and marketing and ensuring accuracy and consistency across channels.
  • To liaise with OGCI’s external agencies and partners to ensure smooth execution of all communications, marketing and event programmes.

Education and Professional Qualifications
  • Educated to Degree level.
  • Microsoft Office (Advanced/Intermediate) required.
  • Adobe Creative Cloud suite, including InDesign and Photoshop – preferred.

Experience and Technical Competencies

  • Demonstrated professional experience at a senior level in communications, journalism, stakeholder engagement or a similar field.
  • Strong demonstrable work experience in communications and, preferably, public affairs, ideally with a specific track record on climate change, sustainability and energy-related issues.
  • Sensitivity to the energy & climate challenge and associated transition complexities.
  • Multilateral, Non-profit, Energy or industrial sectors experience could be a bonus.
  • Ability to understand and communicate effectively across different backgrounds and cultures.
  • Strong cross-cultural background is an important element.
  • Track record of effective collaboration, as well as leadership of small, diverse teams, including external agencies.

Communication Skills

  • Proactive management of engagement opportunities – driving the message not just being reactive.
  • Ability to write clearly for non-technical audiences.
  • Build consensus on topics and develop recommendations.
  • Ability to extrapolate key messages from a diverse and technical management team.
  • Previous media management a bonus.

External Networks

  • Understanding on how to develop and support a robust external network / community.
  • Ability to communicate across a variety of levels in member organisations and with a wide range of stakeholders (multilaterals, NGOs, financial institutions, governments), agencies and contractors.

External Event and Creative Agency Management

  • Ability to prepare a brief for external providers.
  • Ability to propose and execute different types of events, based on desired objectives.

  • Ability to work under pressure effectively, managing ambiguity and change with humour and grace.

Additional Information

  • The position is based in London UK
  • Eligibility to work in the UK is essential.
  • International and domestic travel will be required from time to time.
  • Diverse locations of OGCI CI may result in out of hours meetings/calls, as required.
